Today, the Catholic Church woke up shaken with an unprecedented event. Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation from office, an event unseen in the last 600 years since Gregory XII resigned from the Papacy in 1415.

The circumstances surrounding Gregory XII’s resignation were completely different than the reasons that Benedict XVI invoked for his resignation. At the time of Gregory’s papacy, the Catholic Church was deeply divided and a big schism due to political reasons was at risk. Gregory’s resignation was needed in order to save the Catholic Church from dividing itself.
