Convicted State Senator Can Keep Serving, For Now

CBS Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A state lawmaker found guilty of voter fraud and perjury this week will be allowed to keep serving until a judge enters a formal conviction, Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg said Thursday.

Sen. Roderick Wright will give up his chairmanship of the influential Governmental Organization Committee while he awaits sentencing March 12, Steinberg said.

But he will not be expelled or asked to resign from office until a final judgment is entered by the court. Steinberg said that could be delayed past March if an appeals court stays the jury’s guilty verdict while Wright appeals.

Wright was convicted by a Los Angeles County jury on Tuesday of eight counts, including perjury, false declaration of candidacy and fraudulent voting. He could face a maximum of eight years and four months in prison.

FLORENCE, Italy (CNN) — An Italian appeals court convicted former exchange student Amanda Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito on murder charges Thursday night.

Prosecutors said the couple had killed Meredith Kercher in November 2007. They were convicted two years later of murder, but those charges were overturned on appeal in 2011.

A judge said Thursday that Knox, also convicted of slander, was sentenced to 28 1/2 years in prison. Sollecito’s sentence was 25 years.

Knox, an American, said her conviction would bring no consolation to the Kercher’s family

“I am frightened and saddened by this unjust verdict,” she said in written remarks. “Having been found innocent before, I expected better from the Italian justice system. The evidence and accusatory theory do not justify a verdict of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. …There has always been a marked lack of evidence.”

She called the legal proceedings a…

(CNN) — Federal prosecutors say they’ll seek the death penalty against Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, arguing that he acted in “an especially heinous, cruel and depraved manner” and lacks remorse.

Authorities allege Tsarnaev, a Chechnya-born American, and his brother Tamerlan planted two homemade bombs near the finish line of the April 15 race, killing three and injuring more than 250.

A Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer was killed three days later, triggering the massive manhunt that led to Tsarnaev’s capture. Police shot and killed Tamerlan Tsarnaev during the manhunt.

“The nature of the conduct at issue and the resultant harm compel this decision,” U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said in a statement released by the Justice Department.

After Holder made his decision, prosecutors filed Thursday a notice with a federal court that they would seek the death penalty in the case.

The notice lists…
